WHAT TO EXPECT INSIDE :

Obtain an entry permit before entering to the National Park.
Treat the National Park with Respect.
Dress in colours that blend with the Forest.
Observe complete silence while moving in the Sanctuary.
Use torch light while moving in night.
Obey the rules and regulations of the Park.

Don’ts :

Do not use the boat without having a valid license.
Do not litter the sanctuary and avoid use of plastics and polythene products.
Do not venture out at night.
Do not use blaring musical appliances.
Do not carry outside food into the National Park.
Do not go near the Water Bodies.
Do not carry fire arms and explosives.
Do not carry meat or meat product.
Do not pluck flowers, fruits or any other plant parts.
Do not get out of the vessel while watching wildlife and do not use spot light.

Even though odisha is full of wildlife, if there is one place where you can see a lot of them, it’s BhitaraKanika National Park, an estuary(where river meets the sea) in the Rajnagar block of kendrapara district.

On our recent trip there, we spotted various Birds (both migratory and resident including egrets, different colours of Kingfishers , wood peckers etc.) scores of deers , wild boars, Monitor lizard and of course large, fierce salt-water crocodiles more than 20 feet long.Currently their number stands at more than 1700, thanks to the conservation and breeding efforts of the Odisha Government.

Bhitarkanika is Odisha’s own little Amazonia. Just a boat ride through the creek with mangrove forests on both sides is enough to lift your spirits. A walk through a Jungle trail it also a great experience.

You can stay at the various Forest Department Eco cottages in places such as Gupti and Dangamala .It’s a three-hour journey from the state capital Bhubaneswar.

Sightseeing is done on boats which have got forest department licenses. Main entrance to the forest is from Khola Gate, even though there is another gate called Gupti gate. Tourism was almost non-existent here till a few years ago. This trend is changing steadily with efforts on the marketing front by one or two resorts. Odisha Government has shown little enthusiasm in promoting this area for tourism. But of late, Odisha Tourism is displaying Bhitarkanika as a destination for eco-friendly and rich nature where tourists can enjoy variety of wildlife and birds.
